Lupita Nyong'o

This beautifully talented African gem is the reason why so many individuals have become relentless in pursuing their dreams. She embodies the spirit of ambition and hard work which as a combination have taken her quite far and I am guessing are still going to take her even further.

What has always been constant for Lupita is her love for the arts, unlike most of us who always choose to shy away from using our talents. With support from her family she went for what she wanted and the fruits of her ambition are now showing.

Lupita Amondi Nyongó was born in Mexico at a time when Kenya was experiencing political unrest. Shortly after her birth the entire family moved back to Kenya where she was raised and went to school. After her primary and secondary school education in Kenya she went on to get a bachelor’s degree in film and theater studies from Hampshire College.

Her career in Hollywood started off with her in production of quite a number of films. Her acting debut on film was for a short film titled East River which came right before she got a lead role in Shuga; a Kenyan series focusing on creating awareness of HIV/AIDS and campaigning for prevention. While pursuing her master’s degree she wrote, produced and directed the documentary In My Genes which showed the lives of albinos living in Kenya. It received quite positive feedback and even earned her an award.

After getting her Master’s degree in acting from Yale School of Drama she got her first feature film role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave which got her several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Since then she just seems to be getting bigger and bigger - from becoming Lancôme ambassador to starring in other major productions including King of Katwe and the most recent Black Panther.

She is expected to act as Trevor Noah’s mother in the film adaptation of his book ‘Born a crime’ which she will also co-produce. She is a very busy lady no doubt and when I say that all eyes are now on her it would not be a lie. Especially within Africa, she has become a role model to so many girls who have constantly seen only a certain type of look considered beautiful. She is a dark beauty, with a strong lean frame who has broken barriers and I have a feeling she is just getting stated. All eyes are on Lupita and all of Africa with her.
