What Filmakers Can Learn From The Highest Grossing Films

2018 has been a big year in terms of the film industry; I am saying this in reference to Black Panther, the long awaited superhero film. In the span of just a few months it has managed to clinch a spot on the list of the top ten highest grossing movies of all time. It is from this very list that filmmakers can learn a lot about what people like and expect when sitting to watch a film.

Black Panther, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part II, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast and Furious 7, Marvel’s the Avengers, Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Titanic and Avatar are among the highest grossing films of all time. It is quite unfortunate that the list is determined by the amount of money it generates as opposed to the impact it creates. From this list there are a few lessons that filmmakers can learn;

1. The story is the foundation - Every skyscraper starts with a strong foundation. Similarly in order for a good film to be produced the story/script should be phenomenal and intriguing. Every good story should be organized and have a beginning, climax and ending. It is also through the script that the genre of the film to be produced is determined.

2. Quality productions are a must for them to be successes - Take a look at Titanic which was released in 1997. The picture quality, lighting and sound are all well done. Apart from the story, the execution of the film is an essential component; after all it is what is presented for public consumption.

3. Step out of the box - A good number of people watch movies to relate, entertain and to escape. Almost ninety percent of the highest grossing films are what we could term as ‘supernatural’. They may be supernatural in terms of characters (avatar), environment (star wars) or even powers (the avengers). From this, filmmakers should realize that people want to see what creativity runs through the filmmaker’s minds. They should not be afraid to explore something different; most of the time people often watch films to see something new.
